My work as an artist is very much in the nature of play. I start by assembling and manipulating materials, painting and cutting paper, bending wire, attaching pieces of metal together, etc., usually with no image in mind. If I find myself in a playful state and all goes well, an interesting subject or pattern for development will sometimes appear. I try to be open during this process to allow for the unexpected. The unintended. It is always best when the resulting image is a surprise to me. A lot of my images have unusual characters for subjects with faces that are somewhat but not quite human. Caricatures. Sketches or cartoons. These characters have been with me for quite a few years showing up in whatever medium I happen to be working with. I try to allow my characters to be themselves, being playful and fun, or showing a more dark side of experience. A further manipulation will sometimes occur after transfering these images to my computer where I convert them to files for laser cutting from acrylic sheet.
